How Gluten-Free Should You Be?

OK - So we hear alllllll the time about why we should be gluten-free... But, do you know why? I do - so here you go:

One of the main reasons for the popularity of gluten-free diets is the over-processing of wheat. In order to make wheat products more convenient and shelf-stable, many manufacturers remove the bran and germ from the grain, leaving only the endosperm. This process, known as milling, strips the wheat of many of its nutrients and fiber, making it less healthy and less satisfying.

Additionally, many wheat products are heavily processed and contain added sugars, preservatives, and other artificial ingredients that can be detrimental to health. This has led many people to seek out healthier alternatives to traditional wheat products.

A gluten-free diet, on the other hand, focuses on whole, unprocessed foods that are naturally gluten-free, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes. These foods are rich in nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants, and can help to promote overall health and wellness.

Another factor driving the popularity of gluten-free diets is an increasing awareness of the health benefits of a gluten-free lifestyle. For people with celiac disease, a gluten-free diet is essential to prevent damage to the small intestine. However, even people without celiac disease may experience health benefits from a gluten-free diet, such as improved digestion, weight loss, and reduced inflammation.

There are many healthy alternatives to gluten-containing foods, such as quinoa, millet, amaranth, and sorghum. These grains are naturally gluten-free and can be used in place of wheat in a variety of dishes, including bread, pasta, and cereals. Other healthy gluten-free options include rice, potatoes, and corn, which can be used as the base for a variety of meals and snacks.

In conclusion, the significant swing toward a gluten-free diet is driven by the over-processing of wheat and an increasing awareness of the health benefits of a gluten-free lifestyle. By choosing unprocessed, naturally gluten-free foods, individuals can improve their overall health and wellness, and enjoy a variety of delicious and satisfying meals.
